Easy Beach

The story of Detroit punk trio Easy Beach dates back to 2009, when vocalist/guitarist Ian Cruz and drummer Sean Tarolli formed the post-hardcore band Penpals With The President. When the project fell apart, Cruz turned to channeling his musical ideas through solo demos, but ended up shelving them and stepping away from music.

More than a decade later, Cruz was inspired to return to music, channeling feelings of loneliness, frustration, and loss into songs that would form the core of the band's 2020 EP, Mantra (released on Far Records/Sad Jams). After reuniting with Tarolli and bringing aboard "hearthrob" bassist Beau Stone, the band has landed on a ferocious sound that blends the chaotic post-hardcore sounds of bands like Cloud Nothings, Drug Church, and Fiddlehead with elements of energetic surf-punk like Wavves and Fidlar.

The band quickly followed Mantra up with a double A-side single, Selena Gomez / Blurry (released on Good Luck Charm Records), in April 2021. Originally titled "Forget Forever," the band quickly realized the song shared a title with one by the titular pop singer, and began referring to it as "Selena Gomez" as a joke. On the track, Cruz sings about giving up a pet at the end of a relationship over blown-out guitars and aggressive gang vocals. "Blurry" stems from one of the earliest Easy Beach demos, chronicling a bad acid trip over a driving surf-punk beat and angular midwest-emo inspired guitars. Easy Beach is planning to record and release a full-length LP in early 2022.
